Arguably the greatest art tradition in Mexico is murals. Ever hear of Diego Rivera? Having produced dozens of the worlds great muralists, Mexico City embraces the newer tradition of spray based murals and street art. In recent years some of the worlds top street artists have made extended visits to the vast and populated (20 million+!!) area around Mexico City and have often teamed up with the next generation of great Mexican painters when there. With plenty of good dry Stucco and a welcoming embrace, Mexico City will continue to see many street art visitors. Just be prepared to stay a while.

KAWS at the High

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is taking a small step towards recognizing street based contemporary art. While it is very debatable whether KAWS’ work is fine art or massed produced merchandise of pop icons the fact that he got his start in the streets and the High Museum is embracing that is a step forward for Atlanta. The Exhibit is Feb 18- May 20 2012

Here is the High’s summary of the show: An influential member of a new generation of street artists who have successfully united commercial enterprises with their artistic practices, KAWS employs his skill and delight as a designer of toys and other objects in his practice as a painter and sculptor. The objects he produces for commercial consumption are in direct dialogue with his art; in fact, he thinks of his t-shirt designs as “drawings.” His new paintings in this exhibition allude to pop culture sources such as Sponge Bob Square Pants, as well as the more obscure work of artist H. C. Westermann, who also drew upon popular cartoon imagery in his work.

Warsaw has been known for a while for its strong small gallery scene but it is now taking its place with other capitol European cities as a destination for street art. It is no Berlin or London yet but with recent visits by ROA, Blu, SatOne, El Tono, Sepe and Chazme Poland’s largest city is getting noticed. While much of the local art is still graff and stencil based with commuter trains still a big canvas for writers, the city and the community are embracing larger murals. When you are looking to go big, head to Poland.

Street art history is steeped in political protest work. The Occupy George group has found a simple way to convey the facts of our times. “Money talks, but not loud enough for the 99%. By circulating dollar bills stamped with fact-based infographics, Occupy George informs the public of America’s daunting economic disparity one bill at a time. Because ~~money~~ knowledge is power.” We just hope that the Treasury Department doesn’t take too much notice.
